Science Writing

Science Writing: an interactive field guide for non-native English speakers

Science Writing: an interactive field guide for students

Science writing can be difficult. These two short books are aimed at:
  • academics who must write in their second language of English, and
  • English-speaking students, relatively new to the discipline,
who would like to improve their scientific writing. Whether you are an undergraduate writing your first essay, lab. report, or dissertation, a postgraduate tackling your PhD thesis, or a professional academic submitting a paper to a peer-reviewed English-language journal, these books will help you to produce well-written scientific English

The books are based on the experience that I have gained editing scientific manuscripts in the earth and environmental sciences, but the advice that they contain is not specific to any particular subject. Use the links to the mind maps to access some of the core material, or take a look at the slide share for a quick run through of what the two books cover.

You can buy the books in your preferred format by following the links below.

Science Writing: Mind Maps

The links to the right allow you to download .zip files of the the mind maps and knowledge base associated with my two books aimed at helping non-native English speakers and students to improve their science writing.

Download and unzip the files, and then simply double click on the relevant .html file to open it in a web browser.

The Mind Map contains links below each topic that will take you to additional material on the web.

In the Knowledge Base, the arrows below each main topic move through the pages and you can use the browser's back button to navigate between them. The individual sub-topics contain links to additional material on the web. Click the outline icon (bottom left of each page) if you prefer a text-only version.

Top Typos will give you a sneak peek at some of the corrections that I make most often during my editing work, so you can avoid them in your own writing.

Alternatively, take a look at the SlideShare to get a quick summary of the two books.
